Uniting for Progress: How Forum Kenya Builds Strong Self-Help Groups

At Forum Kenya Development Foundation, we believe that lasting transformation begins with unity. One of the most powerful ways we empower communities is by helping individuals come together to form self-help groups (SHGs)—small, trusted circles where people support one another and work toward common goals.

Why Self-Help Groups?

Self-help groups are the foundation of community-driven change. They create a safe space where members, often women and youth, pool their resources, share ideas, and uplift each other through structured savings, welfare contributions, and collaborative projects.

These groups are more than just financial tools—they are support systems, learning platforms, and places of belonging.

How We Do It

Forum Kenya plays a key role in mobilizing and guiding community members to form successful self-help groups. Here’s how we do it:

  • Community Sensitization
We visit villages and urban centers, holding open forums to educate people on the benefits of self-help groups—financial, social, and emotional.
  • Group Formation & Training
Once people are willing, we guide them in forming a group of 10–30 members, establishing a constitution, electing leaders, and opening a group account. We train them on group dynamics, recordkeeping, and governance.
  • Capacity Building
Through workshops and mentorship, we help groups grow strong in financial literacy, goal setting, and decision-making. We also provide tools for starting welfare funds, merry-go-round contributions, and development projects.
  • Linkages to Opportunities
Mature groups get connected to revolving loan funds, partnerships, and other income-generating activities like farming, small businesses, or table banking.

Impacting Lives Together

Over the years, we’ve seen individuals who once felt helpless now stand tall as confident contributors to their families and communities. Whether it’s a women’s group in Murang’a running a poultry farm, or a youth group in Bomet investing in agribusiness, the power of unity continues to bring real change.

“When we come together, we do more than survive—we thrive.”

Join the Movement

Forum Kenya is always welcoming communities that want to start their journey toward self-reliance and development. If you’re passionate about forming or joining a self-help group, we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.

Because united hands build stronger futures.
